Rates for match and firework printing

This is the only product family on the site where quantity tiers run to fifty lakh, because that is genuinely how the trade orders. A matchbox label is a fraction of a paisa of printing and a very great deal of it.

Why this work stayed in Sivakasi when everything else moved

Match and firework printing is the reason there are 520 registered printing units in a town of this size. The match industry arrived in the early twentieth century, brought by Nadar merchant families who had gone to look at how it was done elsewhere; the dry heat suited the drying of chemical-dipped splints, the labour was available, and fireworks followed because the chemistry and the workshop skills overlap almost completely. Both products are sold in printed boxes, with printed labels, in volumes that are difficult to picture — and nobody was going to freight labels down from Madras when a press could be set up on the next street.

What kept the work here after the printing cluster diversified is proximity, not sentiment. A match works or a firework unit ordering ten lakh labels does not send artwork and wait; it sends someone to look at the sheet. The press, the paper merchant, the die-maker and the customer are all within a few kilometres, the approval cycle is a morning rather than a week, and the price is set by a hundred and ninety-one presses competing for overlapping work in one town. No other arrangement in India comes close on this specific job.

The trade also disciplines the presses in a way that shows up everywhere else on this site. When your founding product sells for a fraction of a paisa and your customer counts in lakhs, you learn to hate make-ready waste, to impose a sheet efficiently, to gang jobs, and to quote at a quantity rather than at a price. Every rate table on this site is built that way because that is how this cluster learned to think. The industry guide traces the full sequence.

What is different about printing for this trade

Technical

  • Wet-glue, not self-adhesive. The label is applied with glue on a line, so the paper must stay dimensionally stable when wet
  • Very light paper — 50 to 80 GSM — because the label wraps a box or a tube and must not bulk it out
  • Heavy ink coverage on light paper, which means drying time is the real constraint on the schedule
  • Ganging is essential. Dozens of label designs impose onto one sheet, sharing a single make-ready
  • Colour has to hold across enormous runs — a shade drift halfway through ten lakh labels is a serious problem

Commercial and regulatory

  • Statutory markings on firework packaging — manufacturer, licence details, safety instructions — are your responsibility; we check they are present and legible
  • Brand names and designs in this trade are long-established and fiercely defended. We print what you own or license
  • The season is absolute. A cracker gift box that misses Diwali is scrap, not a late delivery
  • Ordering window for Diwali packaging is July and August; September is already tight
  • Transport of printed matter is unrestricted, but the goods it packages are not — plan your own logistics accordingly

The Diwali packaging clock

June – July: design and dielines

Box structures agreed, dielines approved, dies cut. Die-making in the cluster takes 2–3 days, but every unit in town wants one in August.

July – August: plating and printing

The comfortable window. Board booked at the pre-season rate and the lamination line still has slots.

September: tight but possible

Plain duplex boxes and labels still runnable. Met-pet, foil and rigid boxes are realistically closed by mid-month.

Early October: labels only

Wet-glue label runs are fast and can still be taken. New box work with a die to cut is not a promise we will make.

Late October: nothing new

Diwali is the deadline and it does not move. We would rather tell you in July than in October.

Questions we answer daily

What is the minimum order for matchbox label printing?

Fifty thousand pieces. That sounds high until you see the price: a 4-colour wet-glue label costs ₹0.14–₹0.32 a piece at that quantity, so 50,000 labels is a few thousand rupees of printing. Below that, the make-ready is worth more than the labels and nobody benefits.

How much does a firework label cost per piece?

A flower-pot or chakra wrapper on 60–80 GSM maplitho runs ₹0.22–₹0.50 at 50,000 pieces, ₹0.11–₹0.27 at ten lakh and ₹0.09–₹0.21 at fifty lakh. A heavier bomb or shell outer label on chromo with dense coverage runs ₹0.55–₹1.25 at 50,000.

What is a wet-glue label and why not self-adhesive?

A wet-glue label is plain printed paper applied with glue on a production line, with no adhesive backing and no release liner. It costs roughly a third to a half of an equivalent self-adhesive label, which at ten lakh pieces is the entire economics. It needs paper that stays dimensionally stable when wet.

When should Diwali cracker gift boxes be ordered?

July or early August. Box lead time is 14–20 days, but the die-making, lamination and foil lines across the cluster all fill at once in August and September. By October, plain labels are still runnable and new box work with a die to cut is not something we will promise.

Can you print statutory markings on firework packaging?

We print what you supply and we check that mandatory markings — manufacturer details, licence information, safety instructions — are present, legible at printed size and not sitting across a crease. We do not draft the content or certify its legal sufficiency; that is your compliance responsibility.

Why are these labels so much cheaper than product labels?

Light paper at 50–60 GSM, no adhesive and no release liner, very high ganging on the press sheet, and quantities that spread the make-ready across millions of pieces. The same four factors are why this trade taught the Sivakasi cluster to price by quantity rather than by piece.

Do you print for the match industry as well as fireworks?

Yes — skillet labels, outer and bundle wrappers, and the printed cartons that bundles ship in. Match and firework printing share the same presses, the same paper and the same seasonal rhythm, which is exactly why they ended up in the same town.
