Label & Sticker Printing in Sivakasi — Self-Adhesive, Bottle, Pharma and Product Labels
The trade Sivakasi was built on, still running. Self-adhesive, wet-glue, hang-tag and metallised labels by sheet-fed offset, priced by substrate and area rather than by guess.
In short
Label printing in Sivakasi starts at a MOQ of 10,000 pieces. Self-adhesive chromo labels run ₹0.50–₹3.00 per piece at 25,000 units depending on size — ₹0.50–₹1.00 for a small label up to 25 cm² and ₹1.00–₹2.50 for a bottle label up to 100 cm². Lead time is 7–12 days.

Label rates by substrate, size and quantity
Labels are the one product on this site where the quantity tiers run to millions, because that is genuinely how they are ordered. Price is driven by substrate cost and by how many labels fit on a press sheet — which means area, not shape.

Where the homepage band and this table meet
The homepage quotes self-adhesive chromo labels at ₹0.50–₹3.00 per piece at 25,000. That band is the full size span, from a 20 cm² pharma label at the bottom to a 100 cm² bottle label at the top. This table splits it, because a single band across every size is the sort of figure directories publish and buyers cannot use. IndiaMART's Sivakasi listings show the same problem from the other direction: bottle stickers at ₹1.50 a square foot with an MOQ of 5,001–10,000 from one supplier, offset stickers at ₹5 a page with an MOQ under 2,000 from another, and ₹3.50 a page at 1,500 from a third. Three different units of measurement, none of them comparable.
Sivakasi and the matchbox label — where all of this started
Every offset press in Sivakasi is descended from a label press. The town's printing industry did not begin with calendars or diaries; it began because the local match and firework works needed labels, in enormous quantities, in colour, cheaply. A matchbox label is a tiny piece of printing with brutal economics — fractions of a paisa per piece, tens of millions of pieces — and a trade that learned to make money at that scale learned habits that still show up in the way a Sivakasi press quotes anything. It counts in lakhs, it costs by sheet area, and it treats make-ready waste as the enemy.
That history is the reason the cluster ended up where it did. The presses were already here, already running colour, already amortised against the match and firework trade; adding calendars, diaries, notebooks and school books was a way to fill the other eight months of the year. Wikipedia records 520 registered printing units in the town and roughly 30% of India's diary output — none of that exists without the matchbox label having come first. The industry guide traces the sequence properly.
The practical residue for a buyer today is capability. A cluster that grew on labels has unusual depth in the things labels need: fine register on small work, metallised polyester handling, wet-glue paper stocks, and an economics that stays sane at five million pieces. If you are sourcing a five-lakh-piece label run and comparing a Sivakasi quote with a metro quote, the gap you see is not a discount — it is a supply chain that has been optimised around this exact job for a century.
Substrates, and which one your product needs
The substrate decision is usually made by where the label lives, not by how it looks. Answer three questions — does it get wet, does it get cold, does it get handled — and the choice makes itself.
| Substrate | Surface | Survives | Cost index | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chromo self-adhesive | Coated paper, gloss or matt | Dry handling, room temperature | Baseline (100) | FMCG, pharma cartons, dry goods, stationery |
| BOPP self-adhesive | Polypropylene film, clear or white | Water, oil, condensation, freezer | About 155 – 210 | Bottled water, edible oil, dairy, frozen goods, cosmetics |
| Vinyl self-adhesive | PVC film, conformable | Outdoor exposure, curved surfaces, chemicals | About 180 – 240 | Agrochemical, automotive, industrial drums, outdoor asset labels |
| Metallised polyester | Metallic film ground | Water, handling; shows scratches | About 200 – 280 | Confectionery, cosmetics, premium FMCG, firework packaging |
| Wet-glue paper | Uncoated or lightly coated 50–70 GSM | Applied with glue on a line; not self-adhesive | About 35 – 55 | Matchbox, fireworks, beer and spirits, glass returnables |
| Thermal transfer paper | Coated for a ribbon printer | Overprinting with variable data downstream | About 110 – 150 | Batch and date coding, logistics, weigh-scale labels |
| Art card hang tag | Art card 250 GSM, punched and strung | Handling in a retail environment | Priced per piece, not per area | Garments, home textiles, export tags |
Adhesives and application conditions
Get this right at the enquiry stage
- Permanent, removable or freezer-grade adhesive — a freezer label with a permanent room-temperature adhesive will lift at the corners
- Surface energy of the container: PE and PP bottles need a different adhesive from glass or coated card
- Wet or condensing application surface — a chilled bottle straight from a cooler is not a dry surface
- Hand-applied or machine-applied. Machine application decides the roll direction, the core size and the gap between labels
- Roll or sheet. Roll for an automatic applicator, sheet for hand application and for sheet-fed overprinting
What we need to quote a label
- Finished size in millimetres, and the shape — rectangular, radiused corner, or die-cut
- Substrate, or a description of the container and where it travels
- Number of colours, and whether any of them is a Pantone spot
- Quantity per SKU and number of SKUs — SKU count drives plate cost more than total quantity does
- Roll or sheet, and for roll: core diameter, labels per roll and unwind direction
- Any varnish, lamination or foil, and whether there is a variable-data field to be overprinted later
Printing processes, and when each is the right one
Sheet-fed offset is what this press runs. It is not the right process for every label, and it is worth saying which is which.
| Process | Best quantity | Strengths | Weaknesses | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sheet-fed offset | 10,000 upward | Finest register and detail, cheapest at volume, widest substrate range in sheets | Plate cost per SKU; not a roll process without conversion | Sheet labels, wet-glue labels, hang tags, high-SKU-volume product labels |
| Flexo | 20,000 upward, roll | Roll-to-roll, in-line die-cutting and varnishing, fast changeover | Coarser detail than offset on fine text and vignettes | Roll self-adhesive labels for automatic applicators |
| Rotogravure | 1,00,000 upward | Exceptional consistency on very long runs, superb on film | Cylinder cost is high and slow to make | Very long-run film labels and flexible packaging |
| Screen | Any quantity | Heavy opaque ink lay, works on awkward substrates | Slow, coarse detail, one colour per pass | Spot varnishes, tactile effects, industrial labels |
| Digital | Under 10,000, or variable data | No plate cost, variable data, short runs | Unit cost stays flat as quantity rises | Sample runs, test markets, serialised labels, sub-MOQ work |
Regulatory label content — what we check and what we do not
Labels carry more legal obligation per square centimetre than anything else we print, and the responsibility split needs to be explicit. You own the content and its accuracy. We check that mandatory elements are present, legible at the printed size, and physically placed where they remain visible on the applied label — and we flag anything that looks wrong before plates are made.
For packaged food we look for the FSSAI licence number, the green or brown vegetarian mark, net quantity, ingredient and allergen declarations, nutritional information, the manufacturer or packer address, and batch and date fields with enough clear space for downstream coding. For agrochemicals we look for the CIB registration number, the toxicity triangle in the correct colour band, antidote statement and the leaflet reference. For pharmaceuticals we look for the schedule symbol, the Rx or warning box, the batch, manufacturing and expiry fields, and the storage statement. For anything with a barcode we check the quiet zone, the magnification and that the bars run in a direction the scanner will see.
What we will not do is draft that content, confirm that a licence number is current, or take responsibility for a declaration being legally sufficient. That is your regulatory affairs job and nobody at a press is qualified to sign it off. What we will do is refuse to plate a label where a mandatory element is missing or unreadable, because that conversation is much cheaper now than after five lakh labels are on a pallet.
Questions we answer daily
What is the minimum order for label printing in Sivakasi?
10,000 pieces per SKU. Below that the plate and make-ready cost per label becomes the dominant cost and a digital label press is cheaper — genuinely cheaper, not just faster. If you need 2,000 labels for a test market, use digital and come to us when the SKU is proven.
How much do self-adhesive labels cost per piece?
A small chromo label up to 25 cm² runs ₹0.70–₹1.40 at 10,000 pieces, ₹0.50–₹1.00 at 25,000 and ₹0.18–₹0.40 at twenty lakh. A bottle-size label up to 100 cm² runs ₹1.00–₹2.50 at 25,000. BOPP is roughly 55–110% more than chromo and metallised polyester about double.
Which label material do I need for a bottle that gets cold?
BOPP film with a freezer or wet-application adhesive. Paper labels cockle and lift when condensation forms on a chilled bottle, and a permanent room-temperature adhesive will release at the corners. BOPP costs roughly 55–110% more than chromo paper and it is the difference between a label that stays on and one that does not.
Can you print matchbox and fireworks labels?
Yes — it is the trade the cluster was built on. Wet-glue paper labels on 50–70 GSM run from ₹0.34–₹0.80 at 10,000 pieces down to ₹0.08–₹0.21 at twenty lakh. There is a separate page covering matchbox, flower-pot and cracker-outer label work in detail, including the quantities that trade actually runs at.
Do you supply labels on rolls or in sheets?
Both. Sheets come off the offset press directly; rolls are converted with the core size, labels per roll, gap and unwind direction you specify. Tell us the applicator model if you have one — the unwind direction is the detail that most often makes a correctly printed roll unusable on a line.
How many SKUs can you run in one order?
As many as you like, but SKU count drives plate cost more than total quantity does. Ten SKUs at 10,000 each costs meaningfully more than one SKU at 1,00,000, because each SKU needs its own plate set. Where artwork allows, we gang several SKUs onto one press sheet, which spreads the make-ready across all of them.
Do you check FSSAI and CIB label content?
We check that the mandatory elements are present, legible at printed size and clear of folds and die lines, and we flag anything that looks wrong before plating. We do not draft the content, verify that a licence number is current, or certify legal sufficiency. That is your regulatory affairs responsibility.
What is met-pet label printing?
Printing on metallised polyester — a polyester film with a vacuum-deposited metal layer that gives a true metallic ground under the ink. It is what confectionery wrappers, premium cosmetics and firework packaging use. Sivakasi has unusual depth in it because the firework trade has needed it here for decades.
